Gekiganger III/Gekiganger III Movie
LET’S GEKIGAN IN!
Gekiganger III is a show in Martian Successor Nadesico itself. It’s meant as a parody/homage to old 1970’s style super robot shows (most notably Getter Robo) The OVA I,m reviewing “recaps” the TV series and includes a in-universe movie.
The series itself is about a super robot team consisting of Joe,Ken and AKira (homages to Hayato,Ryouma and Benkei). The OVA starts with a group of scientists uncovering blueprints to a ancient combat mech named “Gekiganger III” the protagonists fight against a alien empire named the “Kyo’akk”. Characthers get introduced and killed off without any real characterization.
except for Joe. I cried for three days straight after he died ;_; this hapens around the half-way point and introduces the upgrade to the Gekiganger III called Gekiganger V. Most of the eps are condensed into about 2 seconds to 1 minute.
The movie itself forces the Gekiganger team and the Kyo’akk to team up and defeat a new group of enemies called “the super ancient race”. During the OVA the Gekiganger V gets re-introduced and used the final fight. The movie ends with Gekiganger III,V and the Kyo-akk prince saving the day. The OVA itself ends with Yurika handing out wedding invetations to Ruri and Minato.
ANIMATION AND ART
the designs and some of the animation have this raw feel to them fitting in with the overall 70’s aesthetics of Gekiganger. Most of the animation is about the same as the Nadesico main series (then again this is done by the same team) with heavy use of stock footage again to fit in with the 70’s aesthetics.
if you are a fan of both Nadesico and old super robot shows like Getter Robo and Mazinger it’s a must see. 7/10 It’s not perfect but a fun OVA all around. Also when is Gekiganger III going to apear in SRW? I also hope that we are going to get a Gunvarrel OVA.
Martian Succesor Nadesico: The Prince Of Darkness
The Prince of Darkness is set 3 years after the original series ended. Most of the Nadesico crew has adapted to civilian life with the exception of Akito,Yurika and Inez who presumably died in a shuttle crash and Ruri who became a high-ranking officer of the Earth’s space forces and captain of a next-generation battleship the Nadesico-B. The main conflict has to do with a group calling themself Mars’ succsesors planning to monopolize boson jumping by kidnapping everybody who can jump.
the animation looks beter then the TV series. Then again this is a movie and has a higher budget.
it’s not necessary to watch this since the TV series can stand on it’s own. Only watch it if you liked the series.
8/10 good but not really necessary.
Mars Of Destruction
it’s like I,m watching a shitty fanfic turned shitty OVA
the story feels like a 60 minute movie compressed into a 15 minute OVA moving at break-neck speed and littered with exposition.
I also had the feeling it was based on some sort of Kamen Rider fanfic written by a edgy teen.
The story has to do with a corps of alien hunters consisting of about 5 little girls with the survival instincts of suicidal lemmings and one angsty Kamen Rider.
Troughout the OVA they have about 2 battles with the last one ending on a non-ending.
it feels rushed and stilted with lots of points where you can see that they animators where getting lazy.
I also had the feeling that I was reading a VN without the text parts.
public domain for the most part.
it’s something that you have to see for yourself.
if anything it’s the anime’s equivelant of Plan 9 from outer space.
2/10 it’s so shitty, but it’s shitty in a way that you can’t look away.
The World God Only knows S1/2
TWGOK follows Keima Katsuragi he spends most of his time playing Dating sims/visual novels.
Until he’s tasked with hitting on girls by the demon Elsie.
From there on out it’s mostly episodic with most “arcs” taking about 2 episodes.
There are some stand-alone eps like the season finales and eps that focus on Keima’s VN’s.
There are some shout outs to famous anime like Black Jack,Gundam 0079 and even World Masterpiece Theater. And also shout outs to other games, like the final ep focusing on a game produced by a Studio Key expy (the guys that made Clannad and Kanon)
nothing to special. It’s not terrible but not bad either.
it’s a fun little anime with my only gripe being that to many eps focused on Tsunderes.
it’s a fun little series but nothing to special.
the story follows Seras Victoria who due to circumstances had to be turned into a vampire. She works under the secret Hellsing organization with Alucard.
The main conflict is about a mysterious cult that turns normal people into fake vampires (nicknamed “freaks” due to their lack of manners/ethics) with the help of chips. The story mostly follows a monster-of-the week format with the only recurring “monster” being a catholic ninja priest sent by the Vatican.
I think this is around the time that studious started outsourcing to Korea. The animation looks lazy at some parts (IE limited animation, obscuring mouths in dialouge scenes, etc.) and the CGI used in the ending looks like it came from a PSX or N64 game. Although the animation used on “monster Alucard” looks decent.
I watched the dub for this once since Hellsing is set in the UK.
The dub is handled pretty well. Alucard’s dub actor captures the badassery and slight insanity really well. And the cockney accent on the freaks really fits them.
the animation is a bit lacking but if you are a fan of the series you might like it. Then again you probably already saw it by now.
In short dub over sub and don’t watch it for the nice animation.
Martian Succesor Nadesico
the story is set a few hundred years in the future, humanity has space colonies,a city on the moon and Teraformed Mars. A few years prior to the start of Nadesico a alien race from Jupiter attacked the Mars colony. Now a privately owned space ship called the Nadesico is on a mission to reclaim Mars.
Nadesico has a pretty interesting fun with my favorite aspect being that the protagonist himself is a mech anime fan (of the albeit fictional Gekiganger III)
With my only gripe being mood whiplashes.
the animetion looks good for its time and I really like it that the show in a show Gekiganger III actually looks like a 70’s super robot show (including the hotblooded opening theme)
You Get The Burning is a really good opening song and I like that it’s sometimes sung by the shows characthers.
it’s a really good show, the only drawback being the aforementioned mood whiplashes and that in my option the ending was a bit of a asspull (it’s something you have to see for yourself)
Getter Robo (manga)
I have no words on how awesome this is
Getter Robo’s explanation about why we don’t see any dinosaurs anymore is different from popular science. Instead of a asteroid the dinosaurs got killed bt Getter Rays a mysterious new form of energy. Allot of the dinosaurs fled to the core of the earth waiting for the right moment to take over/terraform the earth.
Meanwhile human scientist build a super robot named the Getter Robo.
The getter is built up from three jet fighters that combine into one of the getter’s three forms.
Getter 1 (pictured) the most used form and can use a special getter ray beam and mostly uses two tomahawks.
Getter 2 built for ground combat and uses drills.
Getter 3 the least used. Build for land combat it can use extended arms and rockets. It’s also the only form that doesn’t have legs.
the story mainly follows the three getter pilots and most other characthers are background characthers.
As with all Go Nagai series the characthers have balls the size of bowling balls.
a highly trained martial artist who in the first chapter fights of a 6 feet boxer, sword fighter and knife thrower by himself.
He’s the first pilot chosen by the lead proffesor.
He pilots the Getter 1 and Jaguar jet.
a highly inteligent deliquent that was planning to overthrow the government.
He’s the second pilot chosen for the Getter and pilots the Eagle jet and Getter 2
He started out as a bit of a fanboy but turned out to be a really good pilot.
Pilot of the Bear jet and Getter 3
like with anything by Go Nagai everybody in this story is a complete badass. If you plan to get into Getter Robo this manga is a good place to start.
Digital Devil Saga 女神転生
the Kanji makes it look cooler
Digital Devil saga is a highly condensed adaptation of the first Digital Devil Saga novell/Famicom game.
The story is about Akemi Nakajima. He goes to a prestigious school where he is the smartest in his class. He gets bullied and decides to enact revenge by summoning the demon Loki. Around the same time a new transfer student named Yumiko Shirasagi gets introduced. After Nakajima took his revenge Loki rebelled and planned to fully materialize himself so he could take over the world.
It ultimately ends on a sequel hook that sadly never got picked up on.
the animation looks fair for it’s time and Nakajima’s design kinda reminds me of Kamille from Zeta Gundam
the concept of using computers to summon demons is really cool, but the adaptation is handled pretty badly due to it’s short running time of just over 40 minutes. It would have worked better as a 2-3 EP OVA.
4/10 The book it’s based on already received a fan translation and does a better job then the OVA
Lupin III: A woman named Fujiko Mine
A woman named Fujiko is chronologically a pre-qual to the original series. It’s set somewhere in the 1960’s. It mainly follows the lady thief Fujiko Mine and focuses on her past. And her connection with a mysterious mind-altering drug.
the animation and art style are unique and feel almost otherworldly. Fitting with the soundtrack. There is also allot more fanservice then most series, but considering Fujiko’s main method of theft is seduction this is fitting.
the soundtrack goes for a more 60’s style free jazz. It’s really good and I hope there is going to be a OST.
it’s a really good series, a bit more serious then the original TV series but fans will enjoy it.
Black Lagoon review
why didn’t I pick this show up earlier?
The story follows a group of henchemen going by the name of Lagoon company somewhere near Thailand set mostly in the fictional port town of Roanapur.
The story starts with a business men named Rokuro Okajima (receiving the nickname Rock for short) getting caught in some oddjob gone wrong and having to fight the military along with Revie and Dutch. After that the story follows a more episodic story with arcs consiting of about 2-3 episodes. Among other arcs there are, neo nazi’s, murdering kid vampires, a combat maid and the final arc is Lagoon company allong with the russian maffia fighting the Yakuza. The arcs feel well paced and would probably work as a live action action blockbuster/
I watched this dubbed bite me. The dub is actually pretty good, my favorite voice is Leigharch preformed a really good Scotish accent.
it’s a really good series and I recommend picking it up if you like action series. At 24 episodes it’s also not that long.
7/10 The animation could have been a bit better.
